POWER OF YOUTH: POWER TO THE AAM AADMI

The power of the common man was proven today by the activists of the Youth Movement Against Corruption . All over the world today there are are conferences and awareness campaigns taking place to save the environment in which politicians, journalists and social workers are involved. NGO’S are spending crores of rupees to conserve the environment. But the ground realities are very different.
In the name of industrialization, industrial units are playing havoc with the lives of the ‘aam aadmi’.Instead of installing ETP( Effluent Treatment Plants) these units are manipulating the Pollution Control Board. One example of this can be found in the industrial units of Sandila under Hardoi district .Akhilesh Saxena, a social activist has sent reports regarding this blatant exploitation of environment to the Governor & Chief Minister of U.P. State Pollution Control Board(UPPCB) as well as the Central Pollution Control Board.(CPCB)On getting no response to his report the journalists of The Times of India inspected the area. After this the authorities of the Central Pollution Control Board visited the region and the Nodal Officer of the UPPCB was summoned who declined to come citing engagement with the Ganga Action plan. When the CPCB sent a sample to Delhi the report of the results of this test was published on page 2 of The Times of India under the heading “ Zero percent discharge units painted gomti black”.

On that very day the UPCCB served Closure Notices to these industrial units. Yet during interaction with villagers it transpired that their land- which was their sole source of livelihood -had become barren and they were suffering from diseases because of these industrial units. All these villagers subsequently complained to the Special Magistrate( Prosecution Officer Environment) , CBI. When no action was taken on their complaint the Gram Panchayat decided to file a PIL through Himanshu Gandhi (Social Activist), Abhishek, Amit, Savita, Ranjit and the social Actvist Akhilesh Saxena of the Youth Movement against Corruption.(YMAC). The hearing on this PIL took place on 5 June 2010 in before the bench of Justice S.S.Chauhan. Akhilesh Saxena, Himanshu Gandhi,Abhishek,Ranjeet Kumar and the villagers appealed to the Honourable Bench at which the Member Secretary UPPCB and Regional Officer CPCB were summoned to appear before the aforesaid bench to give their reply to the PIL.The next date of hearing has been scheduled on 19th July 2010.
